Obstacle racing’s new social network, The Walking Dead obstacle course, and other news

27 Jul 2012

Fastest Growing Sport In America Gets Its Own Social Network (Webwire)
MudMob.com, a new social network dedicated to the rapidly growing mud running community is scheduled to officially launch on August 14th…Up until now, the only way for ‘mudders’ to connect with one another (either pre or post race) was via the Facebook pages of the respective race organizer, or forums dedicated to the organizer of the race you ran (often filled with spam). MudMob.com looks to fill that void by providing racers and would-be first timers a central place to meet and socialize with one another.

Tour The Walking Dead Zombie Obstacle Course (Fast Company)
The Walking Dead Escape zombie obstacle course was supposed to be one-off branding idea for the hit show and Ruckus Sports CEO Liam Brenner. It turned out to be the beginning of a whole new business…Brenner channeled his two loves–zombies and participatory sports–into The Walking Dead Escape: San Diego, a two-mile Zombie vs. Survivor obstacle course through four concourse levels of Petco Park, the ballpark for the (not-yet-zombified) San Diego Padres. Presented in conjunction with Skybound–the Image Comics imprint of Robert Kirkman, The Walking Dead comics creator/writer, executive producer/writer of the TV series it spawned, and SDCC special guest–the course also celebrated the 100th issue release of the Eisner Award-winning comic series.

Tough Mudder provides economic boost (Reformer.com)
Most summer weekends, Joe Kruszwski and his wife, Wanda, spend their time tending the needs of 10 to 20 guests at their inn…But when more than 20,000 people showed up for last weekend’s Tough Mudder event at Mount Snow, Kruszwski and every other business owner in the Deerfield Valley were “beyond busy,” posting record or near-record sales for that time of year…Kruszwski said the two events this year brought in about $10,000 each, and offered a huge relief to all the business, especially those trying to recover from a winter that mostly lacked snow and the damage caused by Tropical Storm last August.

Obstacle Race League Inaugural Event (Mudandadventure.com)
We are making history in North FL with the beginning of the Obstacle Race League. Here’s how it works: Hobie Call will be putting together a Spartan Race team, Ray Upshaw will be putting together a Tough Mudder team, we will be putting together a Superhero Scramble team, and anyone else that wants to put together a team of 4 can participate…From the moment Superhero Scramble decided to compete in the fast growing obstacle race industry, it had a mission to legitimize the sport and create the Obstacle Race League. With their unique creation of the SCRAMBLE GAMBLE, a competitive wave that pays out a cash prize, and the team competition in the Obstacle Race League which also pays out additional cash, they have harnessed an opportunity that allows the best athletes to turn their hobby into a career.

Red Frog launches Farm to Fork (Chicago Tribune)
Red Frog Events, which organizes the popular Warrior Dash races, will launch a new event at a Naperville farm in September featuring a six-course meal prepared by former “Top Chef” contestant Valerie Bolon…The fast-growing River North company ranks among Chicago’s best places to work and this year began expanding beyond the active-entertainment industry — think scavenger hunts and obstacle races.
